Dosage should be reassessed at intervals of no more than 4 weeks. The lowest dose which can control symptoms should be used. The optimum dosage of Xanax should be based upon the severity of the symptoms and individual patient response. As with all benzodiazepines, physicians should be aware that long-term use might lead to dependence in certain patients. In certain cases extension beyond the maximum treatment period may be necessary if so, it should not take place without re-evaluation of the patient's status with special expertise. The overall duration of treatment should not be more than 8-12 weeks, including a tapering off process. It is recommended that the patient be reassessed at the end of no longer than 4 weeks of treatment and the need for continued treatment established, especially in case the patient is symptom free. Treatment should be as short as possible.
The safety and efficacy of alprazolam in children and adolescents below the age of 18 years have not been established. Should longer term treatment be necessary, then intermittent treatment may be considered to minimize the risk of dependence. It is advisable to review treatment regularly and to discontinue use as soon as possible. If side-effects occur, the dose should be lowered. The elderly or in the presence of debilitating diseaseĢ50 micrograms (0.25 mg) two to three times daily to be gradually increased if needed and tolerated. Thus, the physician who elects to use this drug for periods longer than 8 weeks should periodically reassess the usefulness of the drug for the individual patient.Ģ50 micrograms (0.25 mg) to 500 micrograms (0.5 mg) three times daily, increasing if required to a total of 3 mg daily. The longer-term efficacy of Azor (ANTI-ANXIETY) has not been systematically evaluated. Panic disorder (DSM-IV) is characterized by recurrent unexpected panic attacks, ie, a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort in which four (or more) of the following symptoms develop abruptly and reach a peak within 10 minutes: (1) palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate (2) sweating (3) trembling or shaking (4) sensations of shortness of breath or smothering (5) feeling of choking (6) chest pain or discomfort (7) nausea or abdominal distress (8) feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint (9) derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself) (10) fear of losing control (11) fear of dying (12) paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations) (13) chills or hot flushes. This claim is supported on the basis of two positive studies with Azor (ANTI-ANXIETY) conducted in patients whose diagnoses corresponded closely to the DSM-III-R/IV criteria for panic disorder (see Clinical Efficacy Trails). Azor (ANTI-ANXIETY) Tablets are indicated for the treatment of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia.
